The original Society of Arts and Crafts is coming down right now. It was probably not salveageable, though I sure hope artifacts were better cared for than the fiasco that was the Mowtown Building demolition.
The Society was founded in 1906 by George Booth and built in 1916 by architects William Stratton and Maxwell Gyrlls; by the 1960 most activities had moved to the current CCS campus and in 2003 it was ruined by fire.
More on the Arts and Crafts history in the Detroit area.
A few weeks ago there was also an eerily predictive story in Real Detroit Weekly about the next buildings speculated to be demolished.
